A travelling leather inkwell mounted with an engraved and monogrammed silver top which is hall marked JV (James Vickery) and dated London 1864.
Inside the glass bottle is held in place as is usual by a brass collar operated by a catch and a bung set into the lid. However the spring mechanism is actually under the bottle rather than under the bung which is how it was kept closed off in later travelling inkwells.
The japanned metal finish inside has deteriorated but the spring action is good.
There is wear to the leather around the silver button which you press to open it.
It would just fit inside a 4x4cm compartment and is 3.7cm high if you need to judge the clearance to fit it inside a box.
