A small unlined box with brass pinned hinges. The wood is a layer of bark embossed with a scene of two figures driving a cart and whipping up three horses. One figure looks to be wearing a sword so possibly a war chariot? All sides have decoration -the base with swirls resembling wood grain.
Origin unknown but I did find an identical scene on a snuff box online where it was described as Russian birch bark. Typically birch bark was used through out the 19th century in Northern Europe.
In excellent condition- the catch is lacking a loop of leather to catch it but otherwise it has no faults.
