A bone cotton barrel from a Georgian sewing box. c 1800
The barrel shape is turned and decorated with horizontal banding. It has a carved knob which screws onto the wooden central spindle holding it in place.
Later barrels from c1830 were made entirely of ivory but the flecking on this barrel indicates it was made from domestic animal bone.
