A novelty pressed brass pin cushion / pin holder in the form of a hedgehog sitting on foliage. It doesn't open up (it is the simpler variant) you just stick the pins in the hedgehog's back.
It is stamped W. Avery & Son Redditch and a diamond registration mark dating the design to 1872.
