A wooden box with a pin hinged lid decorated with an early hand painted print of the Bank of England from St. Bartholomew Lane. c1830
The print was published in 1828 by Jones & Co which was copied from an original drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd who recorded 19th century London and was well known for his architectural paintings.
The box itself is of a type known as Painted Tunbridge Ware which pre-dates the better known inlaid Tunbridge Ware- the green painted leaf design surrounding the print being a typical embellishment as are the black flecks of paint on the edges. Inside it is lined with the original faded pink paper.
The box is in excellent condition- the original varnish finish protected the print and is largely intact. There is a small repair to the top right corner where the pin hinge broke through the surface. There is also a minor loss to the edge of the print top left but otherwise the box is in excellent order and just required a light clean. ( please see photos for details )
