A turned bone tape measure decorated with the drilled and black filled spot decoration known as 'Madras'. These early Victorian sewing tools are English but following the Indian style of decoration. c1840
The holder is in excellent condition but the pink silk ribbon tape now starts at 7 having lost its first few inches through wear.

NB. Madras Ware was more commonly made using ivory but markings on the material show this piece was made from domestic animal bone.
