A mid 19th century thimble called a finger guard which was worn on the first finger of the left hand when hemming. Most sewing box trays have two thimble shaped spaces- one for the thimble and one for the guard. This example has the usual wriggle work decoration of the period and a facetted rim. c1840-1860
