A pair of silver bridge pencils in their holder. The case is set with tiny turquoise cabochons and the base is stamped ENGL. PAT. 877 which is an English registration mark protecting the patent of a piece made overseas. It is likely to be German and test as low grade silver (.800) rather than sterling.

The two pencils have coloured stones on top matching the colours of the leads inside-one red and one blue. They are cut with random vertical lines -a friction fit-meant more to stop them slipping out of the holder than for decoration. The case has a suspension loop and would have been attached to a lady's long guard chain or a chatelaine. Although they were intended to be used for bridge or whist they could also have been used to write the name of partners on a dance card-red for definite and blue for maybe!

A luxury piece made c1900-1920.

9cm long including the loop.

In excellent condition- no damage and the pencils have coloured lead in place and are working.
