A mutton bone awl with turning and drilled with a hole for suspension. The point unscrews and reverses into the handle for safe keeping. Early 19th century. Possibly French Napoleonic Prisoner of War work.
In excellent condition- no damage and with obvious black ( dirt filled ) flecking indicating it is made from domestic animal bone and not from ivory.
