A pocket letter scale used to weigh a letter and so calculate the cost of posting it. It is calibrated in ounces with the corresponding cost - 1d, 2d, 4d and 6d. The SW measure at the top was to see if a sovereign was the correct weight. The scale pulls down and then flips back up to close. One end of the tube is fitted as a waffle seal.
It is stamped John Sheldon and has a rubbed diamond registration mark but it dates to around 1850.
In excellent condition-no damage- the cover has to be rotated to fit back on otherwise it is very tight.
6.5cm long
