Two small open work silver buckles dating to the 1780s. They are set with fine pastes and an engraved gold oval. They are backed with the original black leather inserts. The steel chape is stamped 'Patent' and 'Stedman'- who was a buckle maker and jeweler in London in the 1780s.
Stedman's patent design refers to how they were attached. There are two spikes on to the frame opposite the chape rather than the usual pitchfork shaped prongs. There are also the initials ML which probably refers to the silversmith who made the frame.
They are in excellent condition with no missing pastes.
