An early silver bladed fruit knife with a pistol grip handle and butter knife shaped blade. The sides are pearl and the hinge cover steel.

The maker's mark is I M with a pellet between- the likeliest candidate is a London silversmith called John Merry whose mark was registered in 1789.

The knife is in good condition- no damage to the pearl but there is a natural area in the shell at the base of the handle which is whiter than the rest (see last photo). The silver is in excellent condition and the hall marks easy to read. The blade sticks out from the handle when closed but this isn't damage to the spring as the action is strong and does seem to be a feature of these early folding pocket knives.

8cm long closed
15.5cm open
