A 'vegetable ivory' thimble carved from a corozo nut with unusual pierced decoration. Pieces made from the kernels of various nuts were popular in the middle of the 19th century.
They were carved when the nut was still fresh and relatively soft and this example has a row of drilled holes around the rim.
