A pearl topped emery holder for sharpening the needle rather than a pin cushion. The top is a disc of carved and pierced mother of pearl and would have been in a sewing box along with a matching set of reels plus a waxer and a tape measure.
The barrel section is made of domestic animal bone and the interior holds a pad full of emery accessed through those holes in the side.
