A rare writing accessory when a penknife was exactly that: for cutting quills for writing! It has a domestic animal bone handle (as can be seen by the distinctive flecking in the material) and a steel blade. The maker's mark is Thomas Bower and Son. c1780.
It is in excellent condition with no damage to the blade and only a tiny hairline crack where the blade and handle meet. The case is the original and made of hardened paper with a black finish. There is a bit of shrinkage where the lid meets the base which can be seen in photos.
NB. The pointed end of the handle was for reshaping the quill.
The case 18.5cm long
The knife 17cm.
